Chapter 1
1. Defiant is deliberately and openly disobedient; aluminum skiff is a small metal boat.
2. Cole is being taken to a small island in Ketchikan, Alaska.
3. Garvey, who was a parole officer. Edwin who is a Tlingit Elder.
4. Cole purposely spit in the air, so, the spit would come back to hit Edwin.
5. The only people Cole trusted where people who are afraid of Cole.
6. Peter Driscal was a ninth grader, and the one who snitched on Cole about robbing a store so Cole beat his head against a sidewalk.
7. Always looking good but never fighting back or standing up to anyone, and his dad was a bullheaded drinker with a temper.

9. Garvey kept on visiting Cole because he wanted to help Cole.

Chapter 2
1) The prevision that Edwin and gravy made was giving Cole big boxes full of materials.
2) Cole pretended to go along with all of the requirements because he wanted to get free.

Chapter 3
1) Cole feels that nobody cares about him because nobody understood what it was like to be him.
2) He tells Garvey what he hates about his life is that his mom and dad don’t care whether he lives or dies.
3) Garvey keeps pressing at Cole because he wants to find the true problem.
4) Cole revealed that his dad gets so drunk that he beats him.
5) When Coles mother knew that his dad was beating him she did nothing.
6) What Garvey did with the paper bag was that he took everything out and he said taste all these items then he said to taste them in a cake.
7) I think he did this so Cole would see that everything was better together not separate.
8) In this chapter Cole had experienced happiness, sadness, and anger.

Chapter 4
1. Cole is swimming away from the island his greatest danger is he might freeze.
2. The people involved in circle justice are Edwin and Garvey.
3. I do not understand the question.
4. Coles father and lower looked out of place because they were not supporting true freedom.
5. Cole at the meeting he apologized to peter and he wanted everyone to believe he was sorry.
6. It punishes rather than heals. The purpose of circle justice is to heal not to punish.

Chapter 5
1. Cole ended up swimming up to nowhere
2. What happened to cause this was that the tide was pushing him back
3. Coles legs were numbed out
4. When Cole became delirious he tried to find the spirit bear.
5. When Cole awakens from his first night of sleep he sees the spirit bear.
6. The bear made Cole angry because it’s not afraid of Cole.
7. When Cole heard his dad at the circle justice meeting he exploded because his dad acted like he cared.

Chapter 6
1. The keeper told Cole and his father that you can only talk with the feather.
2. He wanted his mom to say how his father beats him but she did not say it because she is scared of Coles dad.
3. Peters lower wanted to protect society and make Cole responsible for his actions.
4. The guard cuffed Cole because he was defiant toward holding hands.
5. His dad deals with his anger by beating Cole and drinking.
6. The one time Coles mom tried to intervene Coles dad threatened him
7. The solution Garvey came up with was to banish Cole to an island before he should be sentenced, so he can walk his talk.
8. When Garvey said to Cole I won’t bet a nickel on your future he meant that you go to jail you wont change or learn anything
9. Banishment means a period of time spent in exile.

Chapter 7
1. Cole feels the need for a weapon to protect him and he makes a spear.
2. Cole creates lots of smoke so mosquitoes would stay away from him.
3. Cole alleviates his hunger by eating a fish.
4. Cole woke up because of the stillness, the bear was about to come.
5. Cole eats a fish to deal with his hunger
6. He went to go attack the spirit bear is what he did when he saw the spirit bear.
7. I think he did this because he thinks the the spirit bear is not afraid of him and he is a jerk.
8. Yes I think this frightened the bear because it fought back.

Chapter 8
1. The bear attacks Cole when Cole charges the bear.
2. The episode with Cole and the white bear was that he got beat by the bear.
3. The pain Cole takes was in the hip and heads also the arm.
4. When Cole realizes where he is the seagulls are fighting over his skin.
5. He told Cole that whatever you do to nature it does to you.
6. Not really he did not follow what he said
7. Edwin’s saying proved to be true because Cole attacked the bear so the bear attacked Cole.
8. Cole experiences a lot of pain and he eats throw up and a mouse.
9. When Cole is one position he is learning how to really live.
10. The emotions in this chapter are anger sadness and loneliness
Chapter 9
1. The one end he thinks he will come to is dying alone.
2. The other contusions are being hungry the weather and the animals.
3. If he were the mother bird he would have left them because mothers don’t care.
4. In the darkness of the storm Cole sees the spirit bear
5. The prickling sensations he felt through his body where splinters of the branches.
6. The lightning breaks a tree that falls on Cole
7. I think that he does not have a complete life yet
8. The author meant that Cole would die if he does not distract himself from the pain.
9. Garvey and Edwin say everything is in a circle.
10. At the end of this chapter he seems like is beginning to learn and grow by remembering bird and he shows concern.
Chapter 10
1. Cole was in painful shame because he carped his pants.
2. Cole would no longer be angry because he did not have enough energy left.
3. When Cole found the birds they had been dead.
4. He was envies of them because even in death the birds wanted to go home.
5. Cole finally understood the cycle because when he dies he becomes fertilizer and makes plants with make bugs.
6. Cole comes to the conclusion that he wants to life because he never really lived
7. Cole was like the baby birds because he felt helpless
8. Cole eats grass and chokes on it. He ate his throw up and a rat.

Chapter 11
1. His attitude is different because now he has emotions for other things.
2. Cole felt satisfied after he ate because Cole finally ate
3. Cole got water by putting his arm in water from a hole he made.
4. This time when he saw he felt hepless
5. Cole spit at the bear because he did not want to give up pride.
Chapter 12
1. Cole cried because the spirit bear it still had pride.
2. Coles response to the spirit bear by not being afraid of it
3. Cole reached out to touch the bear to see what he felt like that killed him
4. The bear was motionless that’s what Cole didn’t expect.
5. What he discovered was that the world is beautiful.
6. I would feel like Cole was stupid to attack a bear.
7. I think Edwin responded when he saw Cole he was scared
8. Garvey beloved that a tree fell on Cole
9. He feels really bad that he is the one that caused Cole that problem.
10. He means that he finally feels ok and alive.
Chapter 13
1. Rosey is a tlinget nurse
2. Cole treats Edwin and Garvey different by calling themselves friends.
3. Cole said that the bear attack was his fault because he hit the bear first.
4. If Cole wants to die he will is what she means by that.
5. Coles dream was that all his mom and his friends all turned into monsters.
6. Cole calls out for gravy
7. Garvey admits he is helping Cole for himself.
8. Rosey tells Cole that in order to help yourself you have to help people.
9. When Cole tells Edwin he is done being mad Edwin says\ that anger is an emotion never forgotten.
10. Cole throws away the only proof of the spirit bear because he only wants to tell the truth from now on.

Chapter 14
1. Coles physical condition is much better and now he no longer has full use of his right arm.
2. Garvey persuaded the gourd not to put on the handcuffs.
3. Coles dad did nothing his mom helped him in the hospital and filed charges against dad for child abuse.
4. Garvey warned Cole that the healing of the physical is the easy part because wounds of the spirit heal slower
5. Cole still has the at.’oow over his bed
6. Coles mom is not scared of the dad anymore that’s why she is doing better.
7. The info that his mom revealed to him was that his dad was abused when he was younger, and that is why he did it to you because your dad did not know any better.
8. Garvey’s surprised Cole at the Circle Justice meeting by inviting Edwin to the meeting.
9. The people who were missing from the meeting are Peter, Peter’s parents, and Cole’s dad.
10. If I was a part of the circle I would recommend that we all give Cole another chance.

Chapter 15
1. Most of the members believed that the case hold be returned to the court.
2. The info about peter was pretty bad he said that peter is not recovering well.
3. Edwin and Cole walk on a straight line first Edwin pushes Cole slowly but surely then he pushes Cole with a hard shove.
4. Edwin teaches the circle that you can change a life slowly or with a hard shove.
5. Peters lower thought that Cole is a liar because he said he saw a spirit bear.
6. Edwin says that the spirit bear lives on island near there and his friend also saw a white bear o the island.
7. The conditions are that Cole had to build his own cabin and sell his stuff for supplies.
8. When Cole said that he meant that he had never really trusted any one nor did anyone trust him.
9. Coles father was abusive because he did not know any better.
10. Circle justice decided to put Cole back on the island in Edwin and gravies care.

Chapter 16
1. Co struggles because he is hurt.
2. Garvey brakes to Cole that Cole has to build his own cabin.
3. Edwin to show distrust by taking out the engine wire.
4. Cole learns that you give trust to earn trust.
5. The world is like a hotdog because you can do anything with it.
6. You make up your own words of the friendship song.
7. Garvey made his meal a feast is what was different.
8. Edwin told Cole to celebrate life.
Chapter 17
1. Fear is what kept Cole awake the first night on the island.
2. The new experience is that Cole has to soak in the pond every morning now.
3. Edwin’s demonstration was that you can break your anger off and still have anger.
4. Anger and happiness are both emotions is what ]they have in commend; emotion
5. Edwin said that was true by telling cole they still think you can get rid of anger

Chapter 18
1. That evening Edwin had decided to do the whale dance.
2. Garvey and Edwin did not help with the cabin because Cole ruined the first cabin.
3. Some of Coles responsibilities where to build a shelter, and make food.
4. To pay for the supplies Cole had to sell his own materials.
5. Edwin made Cole do the whale dance so that Cole could express himself.
6. After the dance each person tells what they have learned from the whale.
7. Cole could not do the dance of anger because he is not ready yet.
8. Edwin said he could skip a day when his anger went away.
9. Edwin made the ancestor rock to show your ancestors are always with you.
10. After you pick it up it becomes your anger rolling away.
Chapter 19
1. The animal Cole saw along the shoreline was the spirit bear.
2. Garvey announced that they would do the wolf dance that night.
3. Coles last chore before leaving the island was to burn down the cabin.
4. Garvey said that the next day everyone will go home.
5. There is not enough room for you and your attitude.
6. When Cole said I’m sorry gravy and Edwin said not to say it to them but to you.
7. When Garvey and Edwin left Cole did the wolf dance.
8. Cole learned that you need the help of others like in a wolf pack.
9. The next morning cool went to the pond and rolled the ancestor rock down the hill.
10. At the end of the chapter Cole saw the spirit bear.
11. In this chapter Cole learned how to control his anger.

Chapter 20
1. Cole told Garvey that in the pond he learned how to be free, and control his anger.
2. He has just seen th3e spirit bear is why he is so satisfied.
3. The meal he prepared was a feast and not a regular meal; it is the last day they are on the island.
4. The dance Cole chose the spirit bear dance.
5. Cole chose this particular dance because he saw the spirit bear.
6. In this chapter Cole learned how to control his anger.

Chapter 21
1. A typical day in Coles life is soaking in the pond and caring the ancestor rock.
2. Cole gets the large log by going on a cliff and then he found it.
3. Coles first thought about the log was to make into a boat.
4. When Cole thought about escaping he felt horrible.
5. So he could not make the log into a boat he put a hole in it.
6. The reason Cole is not seeing the spirit bear is Coles not invisible.
7. Totoms are a life story carved in a log.
8. No cole does not dance the dance of anger yet because he cant contol his anger yet.
Chapter 22
1. In this chapter Cole carves a eagle.
2. Cole carves a wolf next because he had really learned from the wolf.
3. From the beaver he learns how to be persistent, patient, and ingenuity.
4. What troubles Cole is that Edwin leaves to fast without many words.
5. Coles rage keeps on coming because he thinks negative. The emotions I have to overcome are hatred, because I hate a lot of things.
Chapter 23
1. The secret to becoming invisible is to let go of your thoughts.
2. Yes Cole got what he wanted from being invisible by seeing the spirit bear.
3. He celebrated seeing the spirit bear by doing the anger dance.
4. The dance Cole was able to do is the anger dance, when doing the dance he screamed im sorry.
5. When Cole said I’m sorry, I think he was saying it to Cole.
6. I think he’s forgiving himself is who he is forgiving.
7. In this chapter Cole learned to be invisible
Chapter 24
1. Cole learned that anger will give someone else control of you.
2. He should carve a circle to show everything is a circle on the totom.
3. How to heal Peter is what Cole had to discover.
4. Garvey and Edwin revealed that Peter tried to kill himself.
